Catholics and most Christian denominations baptize members when they are infants. Godparents are used to answer for the child and to confirm that they will ensure that the child will be raised according to the doctrine of the church. Typically, Confirmation is the step taken to demonstrate the decision to follow their faith, when they reach an age of majority.
Baptists, on the other hand, do not follow infant baptism. Instead, people are baptized when they make a conscious decision to accept Christ as Savior, and make him the central part of their life. This is done in accordance with the example given with Philip and the Etheopian eunuch in the book of Acts.
